Rebecca and I have been in a little bit of a Mexican food streak, so when we agreed to meet for lunch, we settled on La Casita in Gastown. I had heard mixed reviews, and the ownership structure (apparently owned by non-Mexicans) made me a bit queasy as to the authenticity of the food. Reviewers on DineHere seem to like it. But I have to say that I wasn’t impressed with the actual food.
Rebecca ordered enchiladas, which looked authentic. I had a little bite and I wasn’t fully impressed (better enchiladas at Salsa and Agave, for sure! – SIDE NOTE – The owner of Salsa and Agave asked me NOT to praise her establishment so much because that might generate frictions with the owners of Tequila Kitchen – I don’t think so – they cater to different tastes, and they are both authentic Mexican food restaurants. As we say in Spanish – “el sol sale para todos“).
However, there is ONE thing I was 100% impressed with: their margaritas, particularly their lime margarita. I ordered a strawberry margarita blended and Rebecca ordered a lime one, and they both were awesome (though truth be told, the lime one was MUCH better in my opinion).
If I went there *just* for the margaritas, I think I’d be a happy camper. It’s not bad food, at all, it is good, and the service was good too. But I’m still infatuated with Salsa and Agave (the same way I was with Tequila Kitchen!) – and no, I’m not a fickle eater. I just wasn’t all that impressed with La Casita. But again, as I’ve said, it’s good food.
